Employment Opportunity - Chief Legal Officer

Summary Description
The Chief Legal Officer (“CLO”) is responsible for the legal affairs of USA Gymnastics and reports to the Chief Executive Officer. The CLO works closely with the Board, the CEO, and other senior staff members in managing the day-to-day legal needs of the organization, including contracts, compliance activities, policy development, certain aspects of the Safe Sport department, litigation, and other matters.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Serve as a member of the Senior Leadership Team and consult, advise and work closely with the CEO and other SLT members on all matters needing legal input
  • Report to, and work closely with, the Board of Directors on legal and other matters as requested
  • Work closely with the Safe Sport Department to ensure that USA Gymnastics is complying with (and exceeding where possible) all applicable laws and requirements
  • Serve as USA Gymnastics legal liaison with outside counsel, the USOPC, USADA, and other organizations that have relationships with USA Gymnastics
  • Work with USA Gymnastics outside legal counsel, including developing strategies and best practices to achieve the best and most efficient results
  • Assist management and staff in developing and drafting contracts, including event agreements, partnership agreements, contractor agreements, and others
  • Oversee communication to all relevant parties on progress and status of all legal matters that need to be communicated internally or externally
  • Stay informed about any new proposed legislation or policies that impact USA Gymnastics and/or the OIympic community
  • Ensure that all relevant legal and compliance deadlines are met, such as responses to service of process, responses to subpoenas, and submission of compliance documents
  • Work with management and the organization’s insurance partners to implement a robust insurance program for USA Gymnastics
  • Work with National Team staff to develop selection criteria for all international teams, coaching staffs, camps and other opportunities
  • Work with staff to draft and review documents utilized by each discipline and identify potential issues
  • Work with human resources and the President/CEO on employement and personnel matters, as appropriate
  • Work with staff to ensure proper use and licensing of intellectual property

Other Duties

  • Serve as an ex-officio member of the Nominating & Governance Committee and the Ethics & Grievance Committee
  • Take on special assignments and serve on working groups as requested by the President/CEO

Requirements and Competencies

  • Ability to work independently, while being able to contribute successfully to cross-functional teams
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to simultaneously manage multiple priorities
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of contacts, including outside counsel, executive and senior management, and business associates
  • Strong negotiating skills that lead to collaborative solutions
  • Sound and practical business judgment
  • Cultural and global awareness
  • Ability to maintain a positive “can do” attitude under stress

Education and Qualifications

  • Licensed to practice law in one or more states, with the ability to become licensed in the state where USA Gymnastics offices are located
  • Minimum ten years of experience in a law firm and/or corporate legal department with a strong background in governance
  • Bachelor’s Degree and Juris Doctor from an ABA accredited law school
  • Familiarity with the Ted Stevens Olympic and Amateur Sports Act preferred

  • Position is based in Indianapolis, Indiana
  • Salary and benefits commensurate with experience
  • Weekend work and extensive travel at times may be required
