Gymnasts of the Week – March 3-5, 2017

Gymnast of the Week awards are given by conference offices.


Gymnast of the Week
Allan Bower - Oklahoma
Bower racked up an all-around score of 86.950 to claim the event title there while also winning pommel horse with an impressive 15.300 that was just one tenth of a point away from his career high (a mark set under the old, and more generous, code of points). He also took second on floor, and led all Sooners, with a score of 14.850 that tied the highest by any OU gymnast on floor this season. Bower turned in another second-place finish on parallel bars with a 14.800 and also notched high marks on vault (14.500) and rings (14.400).

Chris Stephenson - Nebraska
* Posted a career-high all-around score (83.500) to take the title in Nebraska’s tri-meet victory over Penn State and Iowa
* Finished third on parallel bars (14.600) and high bar (14.000), seventh on floor (14.150) and vault (14.350), 13th on still rings (13.250) and 16th on pommel horse (13.150)
* The Academic All-Big Ten honoree collects his first Big Ten Gymnast of the Week award

Freshman of the Week
Sebastian Quiana - Illinois
* Took second on floor to help the Illini win the Puerto Rico Gymnastics Challenge
* Finished second on floor with score of 14.750, the highest score in the event by NCAA freshman this season
* Earns his first Freshman of the Week award


Gymnast of the Week
Jonny Tang – Navy
Tang won the all-around competition in both meets in which he competed last week. At the College of William & Mary, the senior totaled 79.8, and notched top-two finishes in the high bar (13.6), parallel bars (14.2) and floor exercise (13.7). Tang followed that with another strong showing at Springfield College, posting a mark of 81.8 in the all-around. His performance against Springfield also included event wins in the rings (13.7) and parallel bar (13.85).

Specialist of the Week
Andre Hufnagel – Army
Hufnagel took first place in the Black Knights meet against Navy and Springfield, turning in a score of 14.5.

Rookie of the Week
Tanner West – Navy
West was a top-four finisher in all six events in which he competed in the Mids’ meets against William and Mary and Springfield. The freshman finished first on parallel bars against William and Mary with a score of 14.4, and also placed second in the high bar and rings events. A third-place showing in the rings highlighted the freshman’s efforts against Springfield.

Gymnast of the Week
Tim Wang - Air Force
Air Force senior Tim Wang (Riverside, CA) captured three event titles, plus the all-around, as the Falcons earned their first-ever victory over No. 10 California in 41 attempts (Mar. 4). Wang won the pommel horse (14.700), still rings (14.150), vault (14.650) and all-around (84.200), while pacing the Falcons on the floor exercise with a career-best and second-place 14.350. His floor score is the second-highest in program history. This is Wang’s fourth career MPSF weekly award, previously earning it once as a freshman in 2014 and twice as a junior in 2016.
